Ginny

Ginny runs on Biodiesel, she is a regular Mercedes van with a regular diesel engine, but with a heart of gold - Chip fat gold! The diesel engine was invented by Rudlof Diesel in 1892, he demonstrated his engine at the 1900 world fair, where it ran exclusively on peanut oil. His hope being it would provide an economic platform for developing countries. It was entirely renewable and emission free, sadly none of us westerners saw the benefits at the time and adapted his engine to run on the ‘petro-diesel’ we have today.

The great news is that any diesel engine can run on Biodiesel without adaptations. Little by little Ginny was weaned off ‘evil diesel’ and put on to the cleaner stuff. There are issues with manufacturers and warranties etc. so have a good read first. We’ve put together some info below and there’s a link in the links section too.

What is Biodiesel?

Biodiesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a Biodiesel blend. It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, non-toxic, and essentially free of sulphur and aromatics.

How is Biodiesel made?

Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification whereby the glycerine is separated from the fat or vegetable oil. The process leaves behind two products -- methyl esters (the chemical name for Biodiesel) and glycerine (a valuable by-product usually sold to be used in soaps and other products).

Is Biodiesel the same thing as raw vegetable oil?

No! Fuel-grade Biodiesel must be produced to strict industry in order to insure proper performance. Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel to have fully completed the health effects testing requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Raw vegetable oil cannot meet Biodiesel fuel specifications and is not a legal motor fuel.

Why should I use Biodiesel?

Biodiesel is better for the environment because it is made from renewable resources and has lower emissions compared to petroleum diesel. It is less toxic than table salt and biodegrades as fast as sugar. By recycling potentially harmful waste oil Biodiesel reduces our dependence on foreign oil and contributes to our own economy.

Where do I get Biodiesel?

Biodiesel is available nationwide. It can be purchased directly from Biodiesel producers and marketers, petroleum distributors, or at a handful of public pumps throughout the nation. Visit: http://www.biodieselfillingstations.co.uk/
